There are three principal options for specifying the distribution of rock/soil types across the computational domain: 1) explicit zonation, 2) external files, or 3) IJK indexing. The explicit zonation option is a good choice for simulations with a moderate number of rock/soil types. Some operational modes allow the rock/soil types to be grouped into scaling groups with the explicit zonation option. The formatted external file and unformatted external file options are good choices for complex rock/soil distributions, such as those generated by stochastic realizations of the geology, where there is a moderate number of rock/soil types. The IJK indexing option is the choice for heterogeneous domains with unique intrinsic properties at each grid cell.
